Losing Streak

Last season ended badly for the New Zealand Warriors who quickly fell down the ladder after losing eight straight games and unfortunately for them the trend has continued with their first loss in 2016 V Wests Tigers last week. The last thing the side would have wanted with the new additions to their squad (namely Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Issac Luke and Blake Ayshford) was getting the same result. Despite losing their first game, the Warriors can take plenty of positives from it - most notably their amazing second half revival.

Second-Half Form

The Warriors can be a scary side for any team to face and it’s not just due to their size. Last week the Wests Tigers had the Warriors against the ropes at half-time with the score at 28-4 which would have most teams accepting their inevitable defeat – not New Zealand. Four second half tries had Tigers’ fans biting their nails in nervousness as the Warriors showed them you can never count them out and almost snatched the win away from them. The Broncos on the other hand didn’t score a single try in their second-half V Eels last week so Brisbane will be hoping that was just a once off.

Playing Smart Football

The Broncos did two things last week that no other team did and it shows they are ready for whatever happens and to make anything happen. The first thing was the 40-20 kick that Andrew McCullough put over the sideline early in the game. The kick caught everyone by surprise and resulted in some great ground being made for Brisbane – no other NRL team made a 40-20 kick in Round 1. The other thing that happened was Anthony Milford kicking a field goal with a few minutes left to spare which sealed the win – again no other NRL team did this in Round 1.

Broncos On A Roll

Plenty of the past games between the Broncos and Warriors have had some more than interesting outcomes. While the games have been competitive, head to head Brisbane are on a bit of a run. They have won the last two games V Warriors and will look to make it three straight on Friday night. Don’t forget though Shaun Johnson and his side did get the win over the Broncos at the Auckland Nines earlier this year.

Who To Target?

Combined these two teams missed 61 tackles in Round one which is a whole lot of tackles. If the Warriors want to break through the line they should set their sights on Ben Hunt who missed six tackles last week ranking 1st in the NRL for total tackles missed. But he shouldn’t worry as someone else on the field also missed the same amount of tackles last week – Jeff Robson. Both halfbacks will no doubt continue to be the targets of plenty of attack on Friday night, can they handle it?
