ALL STARS | Indigenous Youth Summit

The Sharks will be strongly represented at this week’s All Stars Indigenous Youth Summit to be held in Brisbane, with four local area students in attendance.

Bailey Gentle (St John Bosco College), Matt Stuart (Woolooware HS), Marlee Fardoulis (Endeavour Sports High) and Philipa Ardler (Endeavour Sports High) were nominated by the Sharks to take part in the Summit after being recommended by their schools and local communities.

The Indigenous Youth Summit coincides with the NRL All Stars celebrations this week and the Harvey Norman NRL All Stars game to be played on Saturday, February 13.

All 16 NRL clubs nominated up to four (2 boys and 2 girls) representatives to participate in what will be an education, cultural and aspirational experience.

In an effort to connect Indigenous youths with their culture, each student was to be of either Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or of New Zealand Maori heritage and be enrolled in Year 11 (Year 12 in New Zealand), with the selected participants to interact with other young leaders at a series of workshops, activities and discussions.

Each student was required to have demonstrated strong leadership and high achievement in either school studies or in employment.

The four students representing the Sharks, from different Sutherland Shire schools, were all deemed extremely worthy of the opportunity to take part in the Summit.

The Sharks School to Work officer Daniel Holdsworth held a lunch with the participants to congratulate them on their selection and to wish them well at the event

The Summit is run to encourage the value of education and goal-setting within Indigenous youth while at the same time, connecting with their culture and identity, with the aim of making them strong leaders within their communities.
