Burgess – More Than Just a Hat-trick

Sam Burgess has praised the performance of Rabbitohs teammate, Aaron Gray, following his three-try-effort to help the Club to a 48-6 victory over the Newcastle Knights last night (Saturday).

But while most people see the first-half hat-trick as the most salient feature of Gray’s Round 2 performance, Burgess saw much more in the winger’s effort.

Gray also made 146 metres with the ball in hand (second in the team), while also topping the side for tackle-breaks and line-breaks – seven and four respectively.

Throw in a number of brilliant efforts to get out of his own in-goal amidst immense defensive pressure from the Knights, and Gray showed plenty of maturity in his performance.

“I thought there was some great individual performances – I thought Aaron Gray was unbelievable,” said Burgess.

“Everyone sees the three tries, but he did some big plays getting out of the in-goal area which is valuable to us as a team – it’s encouraging.

“Aaron’s worked extremely hard over this pre-season and he’s in great shape. He’s a great young kid, a Souths Junior, and you can see that the hard work he’s putting in on the field is paying off on the weekend.

“It’s the small things within the team that the boys are really enjoying for him.”
