Clubs on notice as Coote looks set to leave Cowboys Written by STAFF WRITERS , February 23, 2016

PREMIERSHIP winner Lachlan Coote looks set to play his final season up north after his manager confirmed the club has allowed the fullback to commence talks with other clubs.

Despite forming a sensational combination with halves Michael Morgan and Johnathan Thurston, Coote will likely become the first major casualty forced out of the premiership-winning side.

“From talking to the Cowboys, it looks like Lachlan will have to move on,” his agent Mark Stewart told News Corp.

“Talks have stalled a bit. We gave them every opportunity (to sign a new deal). The Cowboys came back to us and said we’re happy for you to talk with other clubs, but please give us the final shot.

“The Cowboys have been honest which we appreciate. The basic message is the salary cap is an issue and they have to make a tough call.

“It’s a case where it looks like Lachlan will have to move . . . we’ve gone onto the open market.”

The 25-year-old won’t struggle too much to find another club with early reports suggesting that the Titans and the Knights have already expressed interest in signing Coote to a multi-year deal.

Coote, who has struggled with injury throughout his career managed to put together 26 games in 2016 on the way to North Queensland’s maiden premiership.

It is believed that the club is very happy with the progress made by Coote but are looking to invest long-term in young gun Kalyn Ponga.

“They would love to keep ‘Cootey’ for another year or two, but they have Ponga coming through and they’ve made it clear they see a big future for him,” Stewart said.
