Fitzgibbon’s first grade return

Fitzgibbon's first grade return

After gaining a taste of NRL football at the back end of 2015, Newcastle Knights forward Lachlan Fitzgibbon is ready to rejoin the first grade line-up on Saturday when the side takes on the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

“It should be good, having a second shot at it,” he told Knights TV.

“I’m looking back to my debut and I was nervous the whole time.

“The first game probably wasn’t the best, but I was excited to be there and this game hopefully I can improve myself.”

Since experiencing the intensity of first grade football, the athletic second-rower has worked diligently throughout the pre-season to build his strength and skill.

“I’ve been working on my fitness and trying to get a bit bigger and hopefully that will pay off in the long run,” he explained.

Fitzgibbon believes the transition of the side’s youngest team members to NRL football has been made smoother by the confidence coach Nathan Brown has shown in the developing players.

“As a team, we have a young side and I think he (Brown) just wants us to back ourselves,” he said.

“If we back ourselves, we’ll all have the confidence we need to go out there and do our job."

While he anticipates the Rabbitohs to present a challenge to the Knights’ youth, he views the match an important learning experience for himself and his peers who are continuing to find their feet in the NRL.

“It’s a good test for the boys and there are a lot of young boys in their side as well,” he said.

“I think controlling the ball and controlling the ruck will win It for us. If we get the opportunity we need to slow the big boys down.”
