FORMER Broncos player Mitch Garbutt was sensationally sent off in the World Club Series after decking North Queensland Cowboys star James Tamou with a punch this morning.

Tamou took exception to a 72nd minute grapple tackle from Leeds Rhinos rival Keith Galloway and reacted by slapping his fellow Aussie then throwing a tame short left.

Garbutt, the former Broncos and Storm forward now in his second year of Super League with Leeds, stepped forward and planted a punch on Tamou’s chin, dropping him to the ground.

A melee ensued, with Cowboys players upset with what they perceived to be a cheap shot.

Garbutt was red carded for the punch but received a standing ovation from the 19,778 strong crowd.

A bloodied Tamou, meanwhile, was sin-binned for instigating the fireworks and headed for the changing room.

Tamou, the Test and Origin star, could receive a judiciary charge for striking.

The Cowboys had the last laugh, however, trouncing Leeds 38-4 to complete an Australian clean sweep of the three-match series.
