NRMA Insurance Brisbane Broncos second-rower Matt Gillett is not sure what to expect from the Parramatta Eels in Thursday’s NRL season opener.

Parramatta have been one of the busiest clubs during the NRL offseason, snagging two internationals.

Both Kiwi Test five-eighth Kieran Foran and Kangaroo centre Michael Jennings will be making their debuts in the blue and gold this week.

The Eels were also impressive in winning the Auckland Nines tournament earlier this month.

In addition, Gillett and the Broncos will come up against friend and former teammate Corey Norman, who was named the player of the Nines tournament.

Gillett said the new-look halves combination was going to cause a serious threat.

“We do not really know what they are going to bring at the start of the year but no doubt it is going to be a good game on Thursday night,” said Gillett yesterday.

“Especially with Kieran Foran and Corey Norman in the halves, they are going to go pretty well this year.

“He (Norman) does like to talk - you can hear him the whole time even if they do not have the ball.

“He is a natural player, who just plays what comes, and it will be interesting to see him and Foran play out the season.”

Gillett said Brisbane’s forwards have slimmed down due to the new interchange rules, which may see more attack enter the fold.

The interchange rules have been cut from 10 changes to just eight, meaning forwards are going to have to play longer periods of time.

The recent trip to England has put the squad in great shape heading into the home and away season, according to the 25-year-old.

“It will be interesting to see how the interchange works for the bigger sides,” said Gillett.

“I am sure the whole comp will try the same thing that we are trying to do.

“It will be harder for the bigger blokes in the middle

“We got a lot of confidence out of the Wigan trial.

“All the boys played pretty well and gelled together, and as our first run for the season if we build on that for the rest of the year we will be in good hands.

“It’s that time of year again; the boys are ready to get out there and start the season well against Parramatta on Thursday.”
