SUPERSTAR Johnathan Thurston will be 34 by the time his current contract with North Queensland runs out. So how long might he continue to play after that?

 

Cowboys coach Paul Green, who will rely on Thurston to lead the NRL premiers to the World Club Challenge title against Leeds Rhinos at Headingley on Monday morning, AEST time, doesn’t doubt his halfback’s ability to keep going beyond 2017 and says any decision will largely depend on how Thurston is feeling – mentally and physically – when it comes time to make a call. Thurston will turn 33 on April 25.

“‘Johnno’ knows his body very well,” Green tells RLW.

“He’s still one of our fittest players here – you can see that by how he plays. I think, from this point on, it’s more about managing how we train him and being smart about how we train him.

“He’s got this year and next year on his current deal and as time gets a bit closer we’ll sit down and have a chat and see his body’s going and whether he’s still motivated enough, depending on what has happened in the meantime. We’ll talk about whether he wants to go further.

“He’ll definitely see his current contract out – it’s whether he wants to extend or not.”
