‘It wasn’t the performance we wanted’

BRISBANE halfback Ben Hunt says the season opener against Parramatta was a typical round one game in which the Broncos knew their defence was going to get them home.

Talking to RLW after the 17-4 win over the Eels at Pirtek Stadium on Thursday night, Hunt says: “I don’t think it was as good a performance as we wanted as a team, or myself as well, but good to get one out of the way and get going again.

“It was a bit scrappy from both teams and I was really happy with our defence again, it picked up from where we left off last year. We felt fairly in control all night. We made a lot of mistakes, but we felt like our defence was controlling the game. But we’ve got a bit to do with our attack.”

Hunt, who was playing his first NRL game since his unfortunate dropped ball gave North Queensland halfback Johnathan Thurston the chance he took to win last year’s grand final with a field goal, says the Broncos are feeling fresh after a short, sharp pre-season.

“It was the latest we’ve ever started since I’ve been here, after playing in the grand final,” he says. “Six weeks off, then we got back about three weeks before Christmas and had a little set there, then another break and after three or four weeks we were over in England and playing trials again.

“It was good to break it up like that, a little block before Christmas and then a break and then go again. Everyone was working hard, but it kept us fresh at the same time.”
