Junior Representatives Round 5

The St George Illawarra Dragons Junior Representative squads continued their respective campaigns on Saturday.

The St George Dragons Harold Matthews Cup (U16) and SG Ball (U18) teams hosted the Sydney Roosters at Jubilee Oval, Kogarah.

The St George Dragons Harold Matthews Cup team recorded an impressive 28-10 victory over their Roosters counterparts and in doing so extended their undefeated streak to three in a row.

The win firmly entrenched their position in the top eight at the midway point of the competition.

However, the St George Dragons SG Ball side suffered a disappointing 20-28 loss after a mistake riddled first half, though the team improved in the second stanza and were rewarded with two classy tries.

The Illawarra Steelers Harold Matthews Cup (U16) and SG Ball (U18) teams travelled to face WSAS at St Marys Stadium.

The Illawarra Steelers Harold Matthews Cup team were defeated 26-16 by their western Sydney opposition in a game which saw them start quite positively.

However, constant errors crept into their game resulting in a completion rate of around 50%.

“The effort was always there, but we’re not giving ourselves a chance with our poor completions,” said Coach Adam Blake.

“Until we learn to hang on to the ball we’re going to struggle to win matches at this level.”

The Illawarra Steelers SG Ball team however kept their unbeaten record in tact with a 56-18 win over the opposite numbers.

They remain top of the SB Ball Cup competition but did allow several rare defensive errors which resulted in them suffering three converted tries.

Overall though, the Steelers dominated scoring 10 of their own in a comprehensive victory.

“The oppressive heat out there led to a few more errors than we would have liked, especially in defence, but we were happy to see the boys continue to play some footy and score several wonderful tries,” said Assistant Coach Shaun Timmins.
