MATCH PREVIEW | Newtown Jets v Newcastle Knights

MATCH PREVIEW | Newtown Jets v Newcastle Knights

The Newtown Jets, the Sharks partner club in the Intrust Super Premiership, will be out to break a hoodoo this weekend while at the same time helping their long-term coach Greg Matterson celebrate a special milestone.

The Jets play the Newcastle Knights on Saturday in Cessnock in what will be Matterson’s 200th game as coach since being appointed as the club’s NSW Cup head coach in 2008.

Since that time he has steered the Jets to a premiership in 2012 and a Grand Final in 2008, along with several other finals appearances, with his current coaching record currently reading 199 games for 109 wins, 8 draws and 82 losses.

However if the Jets hope to cap Matterson’s 200th with a win, they will need to turn around a run of losses against the Knights in games played in Newcastle stretching back to 2008.

Following a draw in their opening match and in fielding a quality line up, the Jets have the perfect opportunity to put to bed the seven-year hoodoo and to register their first win of the 2016 season.

The Jets fought hard against the odds in their draw against the Bulldogs in round one, a last minute try and sideline conversion seeing them escape with one competition point and with a relatively new playing group, should be better for the run come the Knights game on Saturday afternoon.

The halves pairing of Josh Cleeland and Fa’amanu Brown had their moments last weekend and will be looking to further improve this time around, with other Jets newcomers in Jordan Drew, Matt McIlwrick and Luke Capewell also likely to be more comfortable in just their second official hit out for the Newtown club.

In all 10 Sharks-contracted players will turn out for the Jets on Saturday.

The Jets v Knights Intrust Super Premiership match is scheduled for a 3.00pm kickoff at the Cessnock Sports Ground (also known at Baddeley Park).
