NRMA Insurance Broncos’ forward Josh McGuire is excited about returning to the NRL field after the toughest nine months of his life.

Thursday’s season opener against the Eels will be his first NRL game since tearing his Achilles’ tendon against the Newcastle Knights last June.

The prop, who became a father for the second time last week, said Broncos’ history proved the club knew exactly how to deal with this particular injury.

McGuire has seen Justin Hodges return from the injury twice, and last year Darius Boyd made a stunning comeback to Origin after tearing the tendon in the pre-season.

It means McGuire, who has played just one trial against Wigan in the World Club Series, has nothing to worry about.

“I am pretty excited (about Thursday) and it is good to be back,” he said after the Broncos had their first training run of a short week this morning.

“It was tough seeing what the boys went through last year, and it is a new season but I never want to go through that again.

“I have confidence in the Achilles’, it feels like it is brand new.

“The club has been through a few Achilles’, so I trust their judgment.

“They say I am ready to go so I am ready to go.”

He showed there are no demons in his mind about repeating the injury, as did Hodges and former Bronco Chris Walker.

“If I do it again it’s just unlucky,” he said.

“That’s footy - you are going to get injuries. I am not going out there thinking about it.”

The 25-year-old will play a tad lighter in 2016 and has maintained his speed despite the injury.

That will provide extra spark for a Broncos’ forward pack that has been given a license to thrill.

Fellow forward Matt Gillett said he was happy to have McGuire back in action.

“’Big Show’ is back,” said Gillett, referring to the nickname teammates sometimes rib McGuire with.

“H played well in that Wigan trial and he doesn’t look like he has missed a game.

“He has come back really strong, and it’s going to be tough for everyone to keep their spots week in and week out.

“The way he plays the game is very aggressive and we are going to need that.”
