McInnes: We aren’t enemies

McInnes: We aren’t enemies Written by GREG PRICHARD, March 2, 2016

SOUTH Sydney hookers Cameron McInnes and Damien Cook stress that while they are competing for the starting spot on a weekly basis they are not mortal enemies who would each gladly trip the other up to get an advantage.

McInnes, who was named as starter for the round-one game against Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Sunday, and Cook, who was included on the bench, each tell RLW they work together at training and are helping each other become better players.

“We work together when we’re doing drills and apart from that we give each other tips and talk about what we need to do in games,” McInnes says. “Everyone says it’s like a battle, but you’re teammates as well, so it’s not a negative thing.

“You get tired of being asked the same questions about it, because players are competing for places in every position. We’ve got so many good forwards, but 10 into six doesn’t go, so not everyone can start the game. There’s competition in the centres and the halves as well.”

Cook says Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire had he and McInnes room together for both the Auckland Nines and Gold Coast trial game trips.

“Cam and I get along well,” Cook says. “We’ve helped each other out a lot at training. We’ve tried to learn a few things from each other and we do our extras together after training as well, so we both know what we want and what we’ve got to do to win the game each week.”
