NYC Match Report | Round 1

An impressive afternoon from the Roosters saw a big 40-20 win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the Holden Cup on Sunday.

It was a back and forth encounter in the opening stages, and it took just over ten minutes for points to be posted on the board.

The Roosters would be the ones to open the scoring, when Kiah Cooper showed some strength to fight his way over on the left edge.

In true back and forth fashion, the Rabbitohs hit straight back when winger Josh Ellison sprinted through the defence to score on the left edge.

Ryan King would score five minutes later for the Roosters, running a perfect line to go over on the left edge.

The Rabbitohs would go on to score back-to-back tries, the first through big lock Brock Gray and the second a runaway try through five eighth Chad O’Donnell to take the lead late in the first half.

Just before the half time buzzer, the Roosters stole the lead back when Luke Chalker barged his way over directly between the uprights, capping off an entertaining first half.

The second half started in ideal fashion for the Rabbitohs, scoring through Tevita Cottrell to get the lead back.

Over ten minutes later and the Roosters would break go on to score three unanswered tries, with Connor Watson taking lead for the team over the dominant period.

Up by 14 points with less than 15 minutes remaining, the Roosters were solid in defence and had all the momentum.

After getting numerous repeat sets on the Rabbitohs line, they would eventually crack one last time, when Jarred Anderson ran a perfect line off a ball from Poasa Faamausili.
