Description –

In a match played in heatwave conditions and in front of a crowd which would build to almost 18,000 by kick-off to the NRL, the NYC Sharks have staged a second half revival to beat the Dragons 26-24 and score their second win under new coach John Morris.

The Sharks played strongly in the first 40-minutes to run out to a 14-8 lead, an advantage that could have been even greater had the young goal-kicker been on target with a couple of shots from wide out.

Winger Semisi Vea managed to cross for the first try as a result of good play from his inside men, five eight Jack Williams got the second, while Jayden McDonogh crashed over for the Sharks third try of the half.

The start of second period however would have disappointed coach Morris, with the Dragons gaining the ascendancy, three tries in a little over 15 minutes seeing them race out to what appeared to be a match-winning 24-14 lead.

This Sharks however showed plenty of fight and refused to concede and it was their left hand side in attack which dominated their opposition.

Winger Sione Katoa crossed twice, centre Lachlan Stein the other and despite all three kicks at goal drifting wide the Sharks had their noses in front at 26-24 inside the last five minutes.

The young Sharks did give their coach a few anxious moments in the final few moments, however a Dragons error let them off the hook as they held on for their second win in as many starts to begin the 2016 season.

While Katoa, who was a handful on the left flank was awarded man of the match, the forwards laid a good platform in the middle and deserve plenty of praise for their efforts.

The Sharks next assignment is against the Manly Sea Eagles in a Monday night match to be played at Brookvale Oval.
