The St George Illawarra Dragons were defeated 26-24 by the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Shark Park, Cronulla on Sunday.

The Young Dragons scored five tries in the narrow two-point loss with centre Reuben Garrick scoring an individual hat-trick.

Head Coach Mat Head has made several changes to the line-up announced midweek with halfback Joe Lovodua named on the interchange in lieu of Keelyn Tuut-Edwards.

Furthermore, prop Nathan Leatigaga was elevated to the starting forward pack in lieu of Matt Jurd who started from the bench.

The visitors had entered the local derby having been defeated 44-24 by the Melbourne Storm in the opening round of the season and found themselves trailing by six points at halftime.

The hosts had opened their scoring account through the quick feet of winger Semisi Vea in the second minute of play.

However, the minor defensive blip was soon remedied by a brace of tries to local Gerringong Lions junior Reuben Garrick prior to the 15th minute mark.

Dragons fullback Matt Dufty had been the orchestrator of the winger’s first four-pointer seven minutes in before halfback Jack Payne’s deft kicking spotted the flanker six minutes later.

Unfortunately, the Sharks levelled proceedings through lock Jayden McDonogh in the 25th minute.

Sharks centre Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga converted to make it 10-8.

The home side added their third try of the encounter through an unmarked Vea eight minutes from the interval.

The visitors were quickest off the mark following the break and centre Patrick Herbert took no time in dodging the Sharks defence to score.

Dragons winger Paora Kemp converted to level the game at 14-points apiece.

The Young Dragons struck again minutes later through the scoring prowess of second-rower Topiese Taufa in the 48th minute.

Kemp converted again to make it 20-14.

This was later followed-up by Garrick completing a well-deserved hat-trick on the left-flank four minutes later.

However, the Sharks had rallied and scored two unanswered tries through centre Lachlan Stein and winger Sione Katoa to make it 24-22.

They ultimately seized the lead through Aumaga-Toomaga’s second four-pointer of the encounter in the 73rd minute.
