EMBATTLED Roosters playmaker Mitchell Pearce has been hit with a hefty fine and will miss a third of the season.

Pearce has been fined $125,000 and will be ineligible to play for the opening eight weeks of the season.

Of the 125,000 fine, $50,000 will be suspended for the term of two years.

The NRL has come down hard on the Pearce who was judged to have brought the game into disrepute after video surfaced of him intoxicated on Australia Day.

The earliest Pearce can play is the Roosters round nine clash with the Knights at Allianz Stadium.

The news is a devastating blow for the Roosters who will also begin the season without stars Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Boyd Cordner.

Trent Robinson will now be forced to pin his hopes on inexperienced duo Jayden Nikorima and Jackson Hastings.
