Rabbitohs lead Cronk chase

Rabbitohs lead Cronk chase Written by THE MOLE , February 9, 2016

TEST halfback Cooper Cronk looks set to play his last season in Melbourne with the halfback likely to move to Sydney at season’s end and there is no shortage of suitors.

Cronk’s decision to leave Melbourne is not motivated by football but rather a desire to be closer to his sports presenter girlfriend Tara Rushton and the Rabbitohs look set to pounce.

The Redfern-based club are reportedly very keen on luring Cronk – who has close ties to Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire when he served as Craig Bellamy’s assistant at the Storm from 2004-09.

Despite leading the club to the 2014 premiership, Rabbitohs halves duo Luke Keary and Adam Reynolds have come under fire in recent months following a poor campaign last season.

The club denied the claims but it is strongly believed that Reynolds did approach the club for a release to join the Titans last December which was immediately rejected.

Meanwhile, Keary has also been linked to the Titans following his much-publicised verbal stoush with owner Russell Crowe at his Coffs Harbour farm late last year.

The Rabbitohs may be the favourites at this stage but the Dragons and the Panthers are also in the market for a quality No.7.

A few weeks ago the Dragons looked the frontrunners to secure Cronk’s signature but negotiations to extend Benji Marshall’s contract beyond 2016 have begun which has cooled interest in the Queensland halfback.

However, Marshall’s future at the Dragons still rests heavily on his form in the opening stages of the season and could very well dictate whether the club steps up their pursuit of Cronk.

Panthers halves Peter Wallace and Jamie Soward are in the twilight of their career and general manager Phil Gould is prepared to throw big dollars at a quality halfback to most likely partner new captain Matt Moylan.

Cronk could certainly be that man but there are strong suggestions that Reynolds could also be a target.
