NRMA Insurance Broncos' fullback Darius Boyd has praised James Roberts for the space he is creating for his teammates.

Known for his damaging attack, the centre is still trying to find his feet in the Broncos' backline.

Roberts is not dominating with ball in hand, only accumulating 110 meters so far this season.

But Boyd he was making his presence felt on opposing defence.

Boyd noted that the 23-year-old’s hard work off the ball ultimately led to the fullback’s first try of the season on Friday night against the Warriors.

And it was a similar story when Roberts pulled defenders away to create a huge hole for Matt Gillett to steam into and score later in the game.

“I gave credit to ‘Jimmy’ Roberts for that try,” said Boyd.

“If he wasn’t there I don’t think they would have pushed out and let me go through.

“He is doing a great job.

“We are seeing the benefits of having him- we just have to get him some more ball.”

Roberts has only been at Red Hill since December and Boyd emphasized he will be given time to settle in - just like the patience shown to Anthony Milford last season.

“It always takes time - people were on Milford’s case last year and look how it turned out,” said Boyd of his superstar five-eighth.

“You look at other teams, such as the Warriors or Parramatta. It takes time (to gel).

“It is hard coming into a new club and a new regime. We have now been together for a year and he is the new guy.

“We know his skills and attributes, we just have to use them the best way we can.

“He is doing his carries for the team- doing the hard yards and defending really well. “

The Broncos have recorded two solid wins to start the season but Brisbane’s custodian believes there is still room for improvement.

“Our ball security and penalties was bit worse on the weekend,” said Boyd.

“Our attack flowed a lot better especially in the second half.

“There is still a lot to work to be done and it is going to be a tough game this weekend.“
