THE Roosters are preparing a dramatic play for Sharks glamour boy Valentine Holmes should he miss out on the long-term fullback spot at Cronulla.

After the trials, Holmes is running third for the prized spot behind Jack Bird and Ben Barba, and has been named on the wing to face the Cowboys in Townsville tonight.

Should Holmes fail to snare the No.1 jersey in the long run, his management is considering asking for a release, with the Roosters ready to make a sizeable offer.

The 20-year-old, who is under contract until the end of 2017, has played 31 games for the Sharks since debuting in round 21, 2014.

RLW revealed last month the Dragons are also keen on Holmes but the Roosters have now jumped to the top of the queue should he get restless feet.

The Roosters have used Blake Ferguson at fullback but officials aren’t convinced that’s his best spot. Ferguson was shaky in the custodian role in the World Club Series against St Helens last month.
