SAM Thaiday's impact value off the bench has played its part in Wayne Bennett installing him as an interchange weapon against the Parramatta Eels on Thursday night.

Bennett today named Thaiday in jersey number 15 for the NRL season opener at Pirtek Stadium.

While some would see the bench as an unusual place to select a distinguished international, there is method behind Bennett's choice.

In the round 1 clash last year the Broncos were blown off the park early in the second half by the Rabbitohs as an inexperienced bench was exposed.

While fellow interchange forwards Jarrod Wallace and Joe Ofahengaue both have a grand final behind them now, Thaiday's vigour will supply some extra grunt as the Broncos make their changes in the latter stages of the first half.

It was during this stage last season that the Rabbitohs took control of the corresponding game.

Thaiday's presence should ensure that is not a problem against the Eels.

Josh McGuire starts at prop in his first NRL match since tearing his Achilles' tendon almost nine months ago.

The only change to the team that destroyed Wigan in the World Club Series 10 days ago is the injection of clever halfback Ben Hunt into the fray.

Hunt missed the international exhibition after serving a suspension garnered from last year's NRL grand final.

That moves Kodi Nikorima back to the bench after a solid display in the 42-12 win over Wigan.

With Jack Reed still recovering from shoulder surgery, English flyer Greg Eden will make his NRL debut on the wing.

It will also be centre James Roberts' first NRL match in the Broncos' jersey.

The Broncos will have their final training run before the game tomorrow morning, with no late changes expected.
