Souths Cares Trio Make All Star Cut

Three Souths Cares students formed part of a 64 person contingent of young, Indigenous students who recently attended the All Stars Indigenous Youth Summit, held in conjunction with the Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars, on the Gold Coast.

The All Stars Indigenous Youth Summit enables participants to interact with other young leaders through a series of workshops, activities and discussions.

Marnie Hardy, Brooklyn Pulevaka, and Aaliyah Parnell, from JJ Cahill, Tempe and Alexandria Park high schools respectively, were successfully nominated by Souths Cares to take part in the week-long event.

The students travelled to the Gold Coast to participate in a four day education, cultural and aspirational experience culminating in their attendance at the Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars game.

“Participants developed skills that allow them to become strong leaders within their respective communities,” Souths Cares mentor, Kiara Maza said.

 “This opportunity meant that our students could meet their peers from around Australia and New Zealand to share their experiences, exchange ideas and workshop their discussions.

“Marnie, Brooklyn and Aaliyah have consistently demonstrated their leadership ability and for them to participate in the recent Youth Summit – it will only help their growth and development as young people and future community leaders.”

To be eligible to attend the Youth Summit, candidates had to have a proven record in leadership with their school, as well as the broader community.

To qualify, students had to demonstrate:

•      Leadership and involvement in school and community activities;

•      Commitment to the attainment of school studies and employment; and

•      High attendance at school.

Souths Cares were pleased to support the students’ participation at the Summit.

“At Souths Cares, we’re all about students staying healthy, completing their education and moving successfully into further education and employment,” said Kiara.

“Recognising and rewarding achievements at school and in the community, reinforces those positive messages not only to them but to all members of the community.”
