Souths NYC Grab First Win for 2016

The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side have grabbed their first win of the 2016 season, downing the Newcastle Knights by 28-14 at ANZ Stadium in sweltering conditions.

While the first half saw the lead change a number of times, the Rabbitohs would outmuscle the Newcastle outfit in the second half by taking advantage of a number of opportunities to score. Winger Tom Perrin helped his side to victory with two tries to his name.

Perrin opened the scoring for the home-side when he raced into the corner, defying the Knights defence in fine style to pick up four points. Chad O’Donnell added the extras from the touch-line to make it 6-0 in favour of the Rabbitohs.

Not long afterwards, a Knights indiscretion within kicking distance saw O’Donnell seize the opportunity to kick his team an extra two points ahead to 8-0.

The decision to opt for the points would be vindicated 15 minutes from the half-time break, when Knights player Sione Mata’utia crossed to narrow the gap to 8-4.

The Knights had other ideas though, with Jack Meaney crossing out wide to equalise, with Brock Lamb taking the lead from the Rabbitohs for the Novocastrians with his pin-point conversion, making the score 10-8.

But Perrin would have none of it – the fleet-footed winger again crossing in the corner after showing some brilliant footwork to outsmart the last Knights defenders out wide to make it 12-10 in favour of the Rabbitohs seven minutes from the break.

The Knights would go straight back on the attack when they came close to the Rabbitohs try-line. After a string of promising raids, it would be centre Cory Denniss who would cross out wide to make it a two-point ball-game at half-time with Souths leading 14-12.

A second-half arm-wrestle ensued, with both teams bombing opportunities to post points, but it would be the Rabbitohs who would be first to cross through cheeky hooker, Maia Sands. O’Donnell added the extras to take the score out to 18-14 in Souths’ favour.

The Rabbitohs would then go on to tighten their grip on the match when Tevita Cottrell danced his way through the Knights’ defensive line before Rory Lillis also crossed to make the final score 28-14.
