YOUNG Broncos forward Caleb Timu is determined to sharpen his defence to give himself a shot at first-grade this year.

Timu has been impressive since returning to rugby league from a two-year Mormon mission. He starred at the Auckland Nines and put in a strong attacking display in last week’s trial win over Wynnum Manly.

But he has made the occasional slip in defence and Brisbane’s stand-in coach Kurt Richards said last week that was something the back-rower had to improve on.

Timu admits defence is an aspect of his game that he recognised as a weakness long before he went on his mission.

“It’s always been something that I haven’t been the best at,” he said.

“Coming back with Wayne (Bennett) and the structures that he has in place, it’s really been able to help me be more confident in defence.

“One of the big things I’ve lacked is confidence in making decisions in defence and having the aggression you need to have.”

Timu is expected to get most of his game time this year through Intrust Super Cup club Souths Logan but hopes to make his NRL debut this season.

He will get one last pre-season chance to impress in a Broncos jersey tonight as they take on his Souths Logan teammates at Davies Park.

The 21-year-old has lost his No.12 jersey to former under-20 star Brett Greinke and will come off the bench.

“It hasn’t been easy but it’s a work in progress,” Timu said of his return to rugby league.

“I feel confident with where I’m at and where I need to be going forward.

“I have been able to achieve what I want to so far. I have set a good foundation from listening to the tips and counsel from the coaches.

“Physically, I’m getting back to where I needed to be and I think I’ve had a good pre-season.’’

The trial kicks off at Davies Park, West End at 6pm tonight.

In the curtain raiser, Broncos' under 20s coach Craig Hodges has named an 18-man squad to take on the Gold Coast Titans under-20s at the same venue.

Keenan Hipgrave and Jaydn Su'A drop back from the senior team that played Wynnum's Queensland Cup side last week.
