The Broncos’ under 20s have fallen short in their National Youth Competition season opener against Parramatta in Sydney tonight.

Coach Craig Hodges will be ruing a loose period before the break where the Eels scored twice that set up an ultimately match-winning 26-12 lead at halftime.

The Broncos scored the only try of a mistake-riddled second half through new player Tevita Pangai, until Dane Aukafolau scored on the siren.

While the score finished only 32-18, the Broncos can at least take heart from withstanding long periods of defence on their own line in the second half.

In the end they had left themselves too much to do.

The Eels played the left-hand side of the field perfectly in the opening 20 minutes of the match and produced a hat-trick for winger Jermaine Mati-Leifi.

The stocky back went over himself the first time, and then accepted two bombs to score three tries in under 10 minutes.

The Broncos countered though in the 23rd minute when hooker Tristan Hope ducked down the short side and gave winger David Fauid enough room to squeeze over.

A nice conversion from the sideline from Hayden O’Hara made it 14-6.

But back-to-back penalties to the Eels gave them four easy points with goals from in front.

Fauid was involved again in the 31st minute, set free down the sideline before drawing the fullback to inside man Gehamat Shibasaki.

O’Hara raised the flags again from out wide and the Broncos had cut it to 18-12.

A try to Aukafolau put the Eels out by 10 and then they produced a 40-20 sideline kick to get themselves in scoring position again.

Half back Troy Dargan took on the line and scored to make it 26-12 and leave the Broncos plenty of work to do in the second half.

PARRAMATTA EELS NYC 32 (J Mati-Leifi 3, D Aukafolau 2, T Dargan tries; Mati-Leifi 4 goals) defeated BRISBANE BRONCOS NYC 18 (D Fauid, G Shibasaki, T Pangai tries; H O’Hara 3 goals) at Pirtek Stadium.
