THE NRMA Insurance Brisbane Broncos have kicked off the 2016 NRL season in style with a hard fought 17-4 victory over the Parramatta Eels at Pirtek Stadium.

The negative on a successful opening night for the Broncos was an injury to key player Jordan Kahu.

The round one win wasn’t a perfect performance but it showed many positive signs for the season ahead.

The second half turned into a tough defensive slog, with both teams having limited attacking chances as fatigue set it.

Anthony Milford broke the second-stanza deadlock by slotting a close-range penalty goal in the 56th minute.

Both teams thought they had added points but were disallowed by the officials.

As the home side tried hard to get themselves back in the contest the famous Broncos’ defence was rock solid and held them at bay.

Milford iced the win for the visitors four minutes from fulltime by calmly splitting the posts with a field goal.

Earlier, Kahu registered the season’s first try as the beneficiary of a brilliant cut-out pass from Ben Hunt in the 14th minute.

A Corey Parker penalty goal extended Brisbane advantage to six points in the 23rd minute.

Milford handed the Broncos their second try of the night moments later, diving on a perfectly-weighted Corey Oates grubber.

Parramatta scored their first points 33 minutes in, with a silky backline move sending Clinton Gutherson over in the corner.

Brisbane led 10-4.

In the 37th minute Corey Oates crossed over into the left-hand corner, assisted by an Alex Glenn offload that was flicked around the defender.

A kick-off mistake by Jarrod Wallace presented the home side with a golden opportunity to reduce the margin heading into halftime.

However the Broncos defused the close-range attack to take a 14-4 advantage into the sheds at half time.

NRMA Insurance Brisbane Broncos 17 (Jordan Kahu, Anthony Milford, Corey Oates tries; Anthony Milford, Corey Parker goals; Milford field goal) Parramatta Eels 4 (Clinton Gutherson try) at Pirtek Stadium, Parramatta.
