Description –

The Roosters survived a scare on Saturday afternoon to down the Canberra Raiders 32-22 in the Holden Cup.

The Roosters would score the first four-pointer of the game, when a kick from Connor Watson ricocheted off the Raiders goal posts, straight to Grant Garvey to put it down just wide of the uprights.

Some sharp play from the backline saw the Roosters get up the field with ease ten minutes in, with Connor Watson taking advantage of the thin defence to get the ball to Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck in the corner.

It was all the Roosters in the opening stages and there was no slowing down, when back-to-back tries to Luke Chalker and Connor Watson gave the Roosters a 22-0 point lead after twenty five minutes.

The Raiders got some momentum the final five minutes, scoring back-to-back tries to make it just a 10 point deficit heading into the sheds at the break.

Alarm bells were ringing in the opening stages of the second half for the Roosters, when Jack Williams barged over for the Raiders to cut the deficit to a converted try.

The Raiders would go on to level the scores only minutes later through Zac Woolford, scoring just wide of the uprights.

They had all the momentum after scoring 22 unanswered points and the Roosters would need something special to get themselves back in the contest.

That special something wasn’t far away, when Grant Garvey passed inside to Connor Watson on their own 40 for him to sprint his way to the line to recapture the lead.

The win was sealed on the back of some Joseph Manu magic just shy of full time, as he skipped, stepped and barged his way through the defence on the right edge.

The Roosters have now won their first two clashes of the Holden Cup season.
