A brilliant attacking display by NSW Origin hopeful James Roberts has inspired the Brisbane Broncos to a 28-22 over the Sydney Roosters in a brutal showdown at Suncorp Stadium.
The match erupted in the 75th minute when Roosters prop Dylan Napa led with his head in a dangerous tackle on Korbin Sims and was sent to the sin-bin.
With the Roosters a man down, Jamayne Isaako produced a stunning match-winning try when he shaped to kick a field goal and then evaded four defenders on a 30-metre run to the tryline.
Isaako was one of many stars for the Broncos, scoring two tries and landing a crucial sideline conversion which put Brisbane ahead 16-12.
The Roosters then stormed ahead through tries to Isaac Liu and Boyd Cordner but Isaako would have the final say.
In a match featuring several intriguing one-on-one battles it was the showdown between Latrell Mitchell and Roberts which stole the show.
Mitchell struck the first blow in the 20th minute when he bumped off Roberts and found Joseph Manu who passed back inside for Luke Keary to score the Roosters’ first try.
Roberts hit back in the 50th minute when he burned Mitchell off a Broncos scrum win inside the 20m zone and put Isaako over in the corner.
Roberts then turned on the jets to leave Mitchell in his wake in the 73rd minute to set up the grandstand finish.
