Sammy Set For Mr Fix-it Role

ANDREW McCullough has been named to start for the NRMA Insurance Broncos against the Dragons on Thursday night but that still means Sam Thaiday is likely to fill a ‘Mr Fix-it’ role for his team.

Thaiday joked on the weekend that he would be playing a ‘bitsa’ role for the Broncos this year – a bit of this position, and a bit of that position.

He has been training at dummy half for stints as the Broncos get set to manage McCullough’s return from a knee reconstruction.

Thaiday was today named at prop and can also help on the edge at second row while sometimes throwing passes from the ruck.

Thaiday’s versatility has allowed the Broncos to stack their bench with forward firepower for the clash with the Dragons.

Bennett today named four big men on the interchange list – Tongan World Cup pair Tevita Pangai junior and Joe Ofahengaue, alongside Korbin Sims and Jaydn Su’A.

The backline is as expected, with Jamayne Isaako winning his way on to the wing for his second appearance in the NRL.

Isaako made his debut last year when Darius Boyd broke his thumb late in the State of Origin series.

He has deputised at fullback for Boyd during the trials, his strong play earning him the elevation to the round-one team.

Jordan Kahu’s versatility again comes to the fore as he slots into the centres, with captain Boyd playing his first game of the year from the back.

Corey Oates is on the wing for the match after trialling at second row during the pre-season, his kick-return metres and knack for finishing off tries too much for the coach to ignore.
